HOMETOWN HIGHLIGHTS: Gardens, Parks & a Toilet or Two

There’s something special about being in a room full of people who care deeply about where they live.

At Hometown Highlights, that energy is unmistakable. Neighbors, leaders, volunteers, and changemakers gathered once again, drawn together by a shared curiosity and pride in Grand Island. And this time, the stories shared offered a glimpse into a summer full of possibilities and exciting opportunities.

The evening unfolded not just as a series of presentations, but as a reflection of the heart that is being poured into this community.

One such reflection was evident with Youth Philanthropy Board students, Kaitlyn, Ethan, Emma, and Riley. They spoke not just about what they do, but why it matters. Through their work, they’re learning hands-on what it means to be a philanthropist and that it isn’t just about giving- it’s about listening, leading, and believing they have the power to shape what comes next. Their voices made one thing clear to everyone: the future of Hall County is already in the hands of thoughtful, capable leaders.

And they’re not just talking about impact, they’re creating it.

This spring, the Youth Philanthropy Board is launching one of its most creative fundraisers yet: “Revenge of the Throne.” It’s playful, unexpected, and rooted in community spirit. For a $50 donation, participants can send a themed toilet—yes, a toilet—to a friend’s front yard. From there, the recipient has a choice: donate $50 to have it removed, or pass the “honor” along to someone else for $75. For those hoping to stay off the potty list altogether, “Potty Protection” is available for $75.

Each traveling throne comes with its own personality—from the regal “Royal Throne” to the spirited “Husker Hot Seat”—turning lawns across the community into conversation starters and catalysts for giving. Behind the humor is a meaningful goal: engaging more people in philanthropy in a way that’s accessible, memorable, and fun.

Toilets will begin appearing across the community April 1–7, a sure sign that generosity and a little mischief are in full swing. You can reserve your placement starting March 23, 2026 by submitting an order form here.

From there, the focus shifted to spaces- the kind that bring people together.

The transformation of the Stolley Park Garden, led by Friends of Grand Island Parks, is one of those stories that feels almost impossible until you see it. What was once an overlooked, overgrown, and underutilized area has become a destination filled with color, purpose, and meaning. Walking paths now welcome all kinds of visitors. Gardens bloom with intention. Art and history are woven together into the landscape. And new additions, from Jayne’s Book Nook to the Hornady Pavilion, continue to expand upon what the garden can be.

But perhaps what stands out most isn’t what’s been built, but how it’s been built. Through volunteers. Through donors. Through a community that decided this space was worth investing in together.

That same spirit of investment and forward-thinking is showing up on a larger scale across Grand Island.

Updates from the Heartland Events Center painted a picture of a facility that continues to evolve alongside the community's needs. More than just a venue, it plays a key role in bringing people together—hosting everything from large-scale events to local gatherings that create shared experiences and lasting memories. As improvements and opportunities continue to unfold, the focus remains clear: creating a space that is welcoming, versatile, and reflective of the community it serves.

Looking even further ahead, the Grand Island Parks Master Plan offers a roadmap for the future—one that prioritizes accessibility, connectivity, and quality of life. It’s not just about adding new amenities; it’s about reimagining how parks and public spaces serve residents every day. Trails that better connect neighborhoods. Spaces designed for all ages and abilities. Thoughtful planning that ensures growth is intentional and inclusive.

By the end of this event, one thing was clear. These aren’t just projects. They’re reflections of a community in motion.
